Masai Mara Wildebeest Migration Safari 2012
The Masai Mara is found 295km to the South west of Nairobi capital city. It is the huge populations of wildlife and the vastness of the wilderness that endears many a visitor to these open velds of undulating grasslands.
Masai Mara/Serengeti migration started in the 1960's with as little as 250,000 animals. In real terms the migration is a cyclic event which can't be said to have a start or an end. The migration of the zebras and wildebeest have become part of their life cycle which is only slightly interrupted by a three months hiatus in Serengeti/ Ngorongoro area where they stop for breeding. It is in the lush plains of the Ngorongoro crater that the wildebeest give birth to more than 500,000 calves. Some of them are quickly grabbed by the predators and scavengers like hyenas and jackals but their numbers never diminishes.
Hardly are the calves given time to get firm legs than the migration season turns the corner and the mad rush for pasture begins. The end of April signifies the end of the rains in Serengeti and the rain patterns turn northwards into the Masai Mara. The great herd of wildebeest gather and start their long sojourn into the Masai Mara northwards. The wildebeest herds are migrating through the Masai Mara in 3 to 3.5 months from July to end October moving from the southern Mara from Sand river area northwards and westwards to Mara river. By this time the rains are very heavy in the Mau escarpment where the Mara river originates and the river is full to the brim. This makes the effort of crossing the river by the wildebeest even the more treacherous.
Finally the wildebeests have reached the Mara river and one thing is certain that they have to cross it. The crocodiles has internalized the migration timings and are lying in wait for the wildebeest. The wildebeests on their part know this fate only too well and are jumpy, excited and anxious. The crocodiles are not actually the main culprits of wildebeest deaths at the Mara river crossings. The stampede itself takes hundreds of them through broken limbs, crashed spines and drowning from the strong currents of the totally full river Mara.
