Masai Mara Wildebeest Migration Safari 2012
The Masai Mara is found 295km to the South west of Nairobi capital city. It is the huge populations of wildlife and the vastness of the wilderness that endears many a visitor to these open velds of undulating grasslands.
Masai Mara/Serengeti migration started in the 1960's with as little as 250,000 animals. Over the years the migration has grown to more than 3 million Wildebeests and more than 1.5 million Zebras; which creates one of the most awe-inspiring spectacles in the world. The migration is always followed by many of the big cats since the it brings with it fawns and easy prey. The Mara river is especially treacherous for the wildebeest migration as they face the giant crocodiles as they make the epic Mara river crossings. Fill in form below to Book/Enquire about this Tour
In real terms the migration is a cyclic event which can't be said to have a start or an end. The migration of the zebras and wildebeest have become part of their life cycle which is only slightly interrupted by a three months hiatus in Serengeti/ Ngorongoro area where they stop for breeding. It is in the lush plains of the Ngorongoro crater that the wildebeest give birth to more than 500,000 calves. Some of them are quickly grabbed by the predators and scavengers like hyenas and jackals but their numbers never diminishes.
Hardly are the calves given time to get firm legs than the migration season turns the corner and the mad rush for pasture begins. The end of April signifies the end of the rains in Serengeti and the rain patterns turn northwards into the Masai Mara. The great herd of wildebeest gather and start their long sojourn into the Masai Mara northwards. The zebra and wildebeest migration will mow the grass along their route with the zebras eating the long stems of long grass and the wildebeest eating the shorter grass. The wildebeest migration will turn westwards in Masai Mara to go near the shores of lake Victoria and eventually turn southwards back into the Serengeti plains to restart the migration cycle.
By late June to early July, the first arrivals of the migration start to be seen around sand river area of the Kenya Masai Mara game reserve for the tender and rich grass stalks. There is also a local migration of the Loita wildebeest herd that moves from the northeast of the park
to the southern fringes when it is dry. These resident gnu populations interact with the migrants and further increase their numbers by 150,000. Fill in form below to Book/Enquire about this Tour
The wildebeest herds are migrating through the Masai Mara in 3 to 3.5 months from July to end October moving from the southern Mara from Sand river area northwards and westwards to Mara river. By this time the rains are very heavy in the Mau escarpment where the Mara river originates and the river is full to the brim. This makes the effort of crossing the river by the wildebeest even the more treacherous.
Finally the wildebeests have reached the Mara river and one thing is certain that they have to cross it. The crocodiles has internalized the migration timings and are lying in wait for the wildebeest. The wildebeests on their part know this fate only too well and are jumpy, excited and anxious. With this hindsight, they will accumulate by the river banks in their thousands, none in a hurry to take the leap of faith into the doubly jeopardised waters of the Mara river. Finally, the front line wildebeests can take the pressure no more and in one sudden jump, all hell breaks loose. Your camera should be ready for this once in a life time explosive event.
The crocodiles are not actually the main culprits of wildebeest deaths at the Mara river crossings. The stampede itself takes hundreds of them through broken limbs, crashed spines and drowning from the strong currents of the totally full river Mara. The vast majority will finally make it through the Mara river crossing and continue with their journey only to return to the same dangers a year later.
Masai Mara Serengeti wildebeest migration safari is one long and arduous journey that attracts predators, scavengers and spectators in equal measure. None is the wiser to decline natures urge to move and discover new pastures; and new experiences for the
visitor on the banks of the Mara river. By end of October, they are already headed for Serengeti and down to the southern Ngorongoro plains where they will bring forth another half a million calves to continue with the yearly journey of survival on the plains.
Masai Mara Kenya is among the top 3 of Kenya's park safaris and is also world renowned for the famous wildebeest migration that takes place every year. It is also the most visited wildlife park in Kenya. The park is located at an altitude of 5,000ft and 295km from Nairobi city through the Great Rift Valley. The view of the Kenya rift valley from the numerous view points along the way is simply breath taking. The Safari in Masai Mara Game Reserve became even more famous from the 'Out of Africa' Scenes with unending grass plains and the solitary tree here and there and covers an area of 1,510 Sq Km. The Masai Mara Game Reserve is actually a progression of the larger Serengeti Ecosystem in Tanzania where 'National Geographic' feature documentaries are shot every year following the various animals in the park. The Wildebeest migration is the single largest pull factor to the Masai Mara which sees 3 million wildebeest, a 1.5 million zebra and hundreds of plains game migrate from the Serengeti into the Mara following the rainfall patterns from Late Early July to September. The migration always spurs a following retinue of lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas and vultures taking advantage as the perils of the long journey take serious toll on the wildebeest.
